Atmosphere is one of her three instruments of education. Not a luxury for after the math is done. A core teaching tool, sitting right alongside the living books on your shelf. So the slow morning where you read one chapter aloud and your child asks questions for twenty minutes isn't a detour from learning. It is the learning. The unscheduled afternoon that becomes a cardboard-and-string world of their own making? That's the feast too. Mama, rest is not what happens after the homeschool day works. You are not just reading aloud. You are placing living words into a heart the Lord is shaping. You are not just folding laundry between lessons. You are building a home where Christ is the center. There is no hierarchy in the work of God. There is only faithfulness. The hours nobody sees are the hours He is using most. So when someone asks what you do, sister, do not shrink. Do not say "just a homeschool mom." You are raising disciples. They told me it would go by fast, but I wasn't pre They told me it would go by fast, but I wasn't prepared for this. Yesterday was Ben's first day of work and Hadassah came with me to my naturopathic doctor's appointment. We had a lovely day together. We went to a cafe, a library, then a couple of thrift stores, and she drove back on the way home. We stopped at a farmer's market, then drove by the new house we're moving to next month and found a beautiful park nearby, then headed home, which is 30 minutes away. All of a sudden, it hit me so hard. They are no longer littles, I kept thinking. They've grown up. They're independent. They're driving. Ben has a job! Oh friend, just retelling this I want to cry. My heart is heavy with a feeling we call in Portuguese "saudade," a melancholic longing for someone or something that is absent, often accompanied by a sense that the object of longing may never return. Saudade is not nostalgia either. It's so much more than that! But with the saudade I was feeling, I also felt a strong sense of accomplishment and gratitude. I taught them their entire lives. I helped them with every assignment, read every book, and led them to be who they are today. Capable, independent... This morning Ben received an email from his boss complimenting him for his hard work. I feel so proud of his accomplishments, but I also feel proud of mine. I did it! I thought. Nothing was in vain. No work in the Lord is in vain. The seeds I planted are giving fruits, and it is a blessing to watch them grow!
