Do you have any hobbies?
Over the past few days, we’ve taken a look at how we spend our time, what we spend it on and what may be sucking time away from us. In other words, we started to be more intentional on how we spend our time and what we spend it on. That leaves quite a few hours each week open to new things. When we’re no longer watching TV mindlessly, or let social media suck us in, we have time to do the things we thought we simply didn’t have time for.

Do you remember having all afternoon, weekends, and school holidays to do what you loved to do? Without the obligations of adulthood, it’s easy to enjoy a hobby or explore other interests. When we become adults, it can become tougher to sneak in those activities between everything that has to be done. We often let go of the things we enjoy doing to the most. It’s time to take back that joy and pick up those hobbies and interests again …or even find something new to try.
One of my favorite hobbies is Bible Journaling. At least once or twice a week I make time to spread my Bible journaling resources over the dining room table or even over my bed and I have a blast painting, coloring, stamping, and journaling in my Bible. Sometimes my 8-year-old daughter joins me and other times I just had a great quiet time on my own enjoying my favorite hobby. Here is why I fell in love with Bible journaling and the three things every mom needs.
3 Reasons Why Hobbies Are Important
#1 – Hobbies are an important part of living with purpose.
They give balance to our lives and allow us to spend some much needed time on something we enjoy. They help us distress and are fun. For example, if you work in an office job where you spend most of your time working away at the computer all day, it can be tough to see the fruits of your labor. You work hard, but at the end of the day, you don’t see anything in front of you that shows what you’ve accomplished.
To balance this out, consider a hobby like gardening, sewing, knitting, or woodworking. Spend an hour in the evening on your favorite hobby and you can actually see, feel, and touch the progress you’ve made.
#2 – Hobbies can also help us unwind and let go of all the stress and anxiety that has built up over a busy day.
This, in turn, is good for our health and mental wellbeing. People with relaxing hobbies like playing music, crafting, painting, or gardening to name a few tend to sleep better and feel more refreshed when they can engage with their favorite past time.
#3 – Hobbies also give us a chance to connect with other like-minded individuals.
There are classes, local or online groups, clubs, and even guilds for all sorts of different things. Or you can simply form your own group. Find a few other cycling enthusiasts and start organizing group rides on the weekends. Start a monthly book club for a chance to discuss your favorite works of fiction with other readers. Embrace your hobbies and interests and make them part of your everyday life again.

I come from a long line of creative people who had a million hobbies. For me, it’s my cooking blog. Not only does it give me a space to write and share recipes, but I’ve met some of the coolest people along the way. x
That is so cool, Alli!! Your blog is amazing and the recipes look so delicious! I need to share some of your recipes on my other Facebook page: Easy Healthy Meals. 🙂
Love, Love, Love all of this! Thanks for sharing. I’ve of heard so many people who’ve discovered hidden talents and purpose after pursuing a hobby or interest.
Melissa, that’s what happened to me when I started to do Bible journaling. I didn’t think I was creative or could illustrate anything. 🙂 IT was totally a hidden talent. 😉
I have been trying to find some new interests. I really love crafting.
I hope you will find something you will love!
Hobbies are so important and I think they are good for relationships. Everyone needs something they love to do.
Sarah, so true! Hobbies bring us closer to like-minded people, for sure! 🙂
Hobbies are a must. In life, we do not usually get to follow our own interests professionally and there exists a vacuum. Hobbies are great avenues for pursuing your passions.
I agree, Sandy!
My hobbies are caring for my succulent plants and reading. I just wish I had more time to indulge in these hobbies. I feel recharged and relaxed after I have spent some time doing these things. I’d also love to pick up on a former hobby, crocheting.
Hobbies do certainly help us to relax and recharge! I would love to do some crocheting too. My mom is so good at it.
I love jewelry making, DIYs, and reading, but lately, I have been trying to add exercise to my list of hobbies. I need to move more. As I get older it has been getting harder to lose weight and I spend way too much time sitting.
Honestly I have a few too many hobbies. They all start to overhelm me a little bit. I think I need to scale back.
I agree! I think we should find hobbies we love outside of TV. So many people plop in front of the tube and veg until bed, while that’s okay for hard days of work, finding another outlet I think is essential to happiness. I like adult coloring books. It really helps me to get out that creative release.
Yes!! I agree, Heather! I love coloring too. Whatever hobby we can find help us relax, disconnect our minds from worries and anxieties, and even have fun.
Yes to all of this. Hobbies have helped me make friends and they definitely help me unwind.
Hobbies really are an important thing, something we should all make time to do and enjoy. After all it is good to take some time to ourselves and do the things we love.
Often times our hobbies end up being a way to earn money, I am not sure why it ends up that way but it does. Still, it makes for some fun time and adventures, as well as some awesome memories. I think hobbies really are important to help keep your soul feeling whole!
I agree we need hobbies! I am worried that computer are taking that away from our kids! I make my kiddo get off and find other things to do just do he knows that there is life beyond computers!
I so agree with this! I personally love to read, so I guess that’s a hobby. I make sure to always find time to do it. I also love to write! Both things help keep me sane.
Hobbies are so important to keep us balanced. One of my favorite hobbies is volunteering. It makes me feel so good helping others and getting in a little exercise also. If you don’t have a hobby just try different things until you find something that works for you.
Sometime I think I have to many hobbies. Love to create and learn new crafts. Anything homemade, DIY makes me feel good.
Some hobbies sure can help with relaxation. I love to read and have been promising myself to give myself more time to do it.
I don’t have any hobbies right now – other than being a mom. When my kids are older, I would love to take up something like knitting.
